How to work out the GPA you need at University of Karachi
Planning backwards from a target CGPA is easier once you think in grade points instead of averages. Your CGPA is total grade points divided by total credit hours. So a target CGPA is really a target number of points. The gap between the points you already have and the points you need is what your remaining credit hours have to produce.
Enter the credit hours you have finished and the CGPA they gave you, the CGPA you are aiming for, and how many credit hours are left. The calculator shows the full working. You get your current points, the points your target needs, the gap between them, and the GPA that gap works out to over the credits you have left.
Karachi University grades on a 4.00 scale, so a required GPA above 4.00 cannot be earned however well you do. The calculator says so instead of printing a number you could never reach. When that happens you have two options. Spread the plan over more credit hours, counting future semesters as well as this one, or lower the target.
The Formula
Current points = Previous Credits × Current CGPATarget points = (Previous Credits + Remaining Credits) × Target CGPARequired points = Target points − Current pointsRequired GPA = Required points ÷ Remaining CreditsA required GPA of 0 or less means you are already past your target. Any passing semester keeps you there. A figure above 4.00 means it cannot be done within the credit hours you have left on the Karachi University scale.
Worked Examples
Example 1: a target that is still in reach
60 credit hours finished at a 3.00 CGPA, 30 credit hours left, aiming to finish at 3.20.
| Current total points | 3.00 × 60 = 180.00 |
|---|---|
| Target total points | 3.20 × 90 = 288.00 |
| Required points | 288.00 − 180.00 = 108.00 |
| Required GPA | 108.00 ÷ 30 = 3.60 |
Example 2: a target that has slipped out of reach
90 credit hours finished at 2.50, only 15 credit hours left, aiming for 3.50.
| Current total points | 2.50 × 90 = 225.00 |
|---|---|
| Target total points | 3.50 × 105 = 367.50 |
| Required points | 367.50 − 225.00 = 142.50 |
| Required GPA | 142.50 ÷ 15 = 9.50 |

Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as "previous credits" at Karachi University?
Every credit hour that already carries a grade on your transcript and counts towards your CGPA. Take the total credit hours figure straight from the transcript instead of counting courses. Karachi University courses run from one-credit labs to four-credit theory courses, so counting courses gives you the wrong answer.
The calculator says I need a GPA above 4.00. What now?
That target is out of reach in the credit hours you have left, because Karachi University caps grade points at 4.00 per credit hour. You can spread the plan over more credit hours by counting future semesters as well as this one, or lower the target. The calculator shows this as its own result rather than a number you could never earn.
Why does the required GPA drop so fast when I add remaining credits?
Because the gap is divided over more credit hours. Needing 108.00 points across 30 credit hours means a 3.60 average. The same points across 60 credit hours is only 1.80. This is also why fixing a CGPA late in a degree is so hard. There are fewer credit hours left to spread the gap across.
Does this account for repeating a course to improve a grade?
Not automatically. If a repeat replaces the earlier grade under your department's policy, work out your current CGPA without the old attempt first, then plan from that figure. The calculator uses whatever current CGPA and completed credit hours you give it, so a corrected CGPA gives you the right plan.
Should I plan one semester at a time or the whole degree?
Both are useful. The formula does not change, only the remaining credits do. One semester tells you what this semester has to look like. The full remaining degree tells you whether the target is realistic at all. A target that looks impossible across one semester is often comfortable across three.
Is a required GPA below zero a bug?
No. It means your current CGPA is already far enough above the target that even a weak semester leaves you above it. The calculator treats that as its own result and tells you that you are already there, rather than printing a negative GPA.
