How University of Karachi GPA and CGPA are calculated
The University of Karachi reports semester results on the standard HEC four-point scale, with eleven letter grades running from A (4.00) down to F (0.00) in .67/.33 increments. Your CGPA, which KU transcripts show as a cumulative grade point figure, is the credit-hour weighted average of those points across every graded course you have finished.
KU grades on marks rather than on a curve, but there is a catch worth knowing: the percentage band behind each letter is set at faculty and departmental level, and the rounding conventions differ between them. That is why this calculator asks for the letter grade from your result card rather than offering a single university-wide marks table that would be wrong for half the campus.
Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA alongside the running CGPA up to that semester, plus a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.
The Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersAn F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours remain in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's SGPA
A 15-credit-hour semester on the KU scale.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 2 CH, A- (3.67) | 2 × 3.67 = 7.34 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.33) | 3 × 3.33 = 9.99 |
| Course 4, 4 CH, B (3.00) | 4 × 3.00 = 12.00 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.33) | 3 × 2.33 = 6.99 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 7.34 + 9.99 + 12.00 + 6.99 = 48.32 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 15 |
Example 2: CGPA across two semesters
The 3.22 semester above, followed by 16 credit hours at 3.50.
| Semester 1 points | 3.22 × 15 = 48.30 |
|---|---|
| Semester 2 points | 3.50 × 16 = 56.00 |
| Cumulative points | 48.30 + 56.00 = 104.30 |
| Cumulative credit hours | 15 + 16 = 31 |
University of Karachi Grading Scale
University of Karachi letter grades and their grade points. There is no marks column here on purpose: KU sets percentage bands at faculty and department level rather than university-wide, so a single marks table would be wrong for many programmes. Take the letter from your result card and the grade points below are what count.
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| A- | 3.67 |
| B+ | 3.33 |
| B | 3.00 |
| B- | 2.67 |
| C+ | 2.33 |
| C | 2.00 |
| C- | 1.67 |
| D+ | 1.33 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't this page show the marks needed for each KU grade?
Because there is no single university-wide answer. The University of Karachi sets percentage bands per faculty and department, and rounding practice varies between them, so a table claiming one fixed mapping for the whole university would mislead more students than it helped. Your department's notification or result card is the authority. The grade points here are the part that is the same across KU.
What is a CGPR on my Karachi transcript?
It is the cumulative grade point figure, meaning the credit-hour weighted average of your grade points across all completed graded courses. It is the same number this calculator calls CGPA. Only the name differs between KU paperwork and the more common label.
I studied under the annual system. Does this apply to me?
No. This calculator is for KU's semester system, which reports letter grades and grade points on a 4.00 scale. Annual-system results are reported as divisions and percentages. Converting those to a GPA needs the HEC conversion formula instead, so use the GPA to percentage converter for that.
Does an F count towards my CGPA?
Yes, from both directions. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator, so it pulls the average down twice over. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.
How should I count credit hours for lab courses?
Give each lab its own row with its own credit hours, exactly as it appears on your result card. Labs are usually one credit hour against three- and four-credit theory courses. A strong lab grade only nudges your average. The theory courses decide a semester.
What happens if I repeat a course?
Enter only the attempt that stands on your transcript as the counted grade. Departmental policy decides whether a repeat replaces the earlier attempt or both stay. Check your result card, then enter only the grades that actually count towards your CGPA.
